Website starter

A practical starting point for building a simple, useful website.

The starter and examples are learning resources. The curated GitHub collection is still being prepared.

THE GUIDED WALKTHROUGH

A simple business page, step by step.

Imagine a fictional local plant shop that wants a clear digital introduction. The goal is a one-page draft that explains the offer and lets a visitor navigate to the details.

The downloadable starter is a single HTML file. It is an educational starting point, not a finished client website. Preview it in a browser, then edit it in a text editor or use it as context for an AI assistant.

  1. 01 / DISCOVER

    Define one need.

Write who the page is for, what they want to know and one action they should be able to take.

  2. 02 / BRIEF

    Give the project context.

Describe the audience, offer, tone, page sections, truthful details, accessibility needs and what is out of scope.

  3. 03 / BUILD

    Start small.

Open the starter, change one section at a time and ask an AI assistant to explain any unfamiliar code. Use only assets and claims you have the right to share.

  4. 04 / TEST

    Check the actual page.

Open it in a browser. Test links, screen sizes, readable text and whether the intended action works.

  5. 05 / IMPROVE

    Get feedback.

Ask one person what the page offers and what they would do next. Fix the most important confusion first.

PROJECT BRIEF

Start with the problem.

Write a short answer for each prompt before opening a tool or repository.

  • Who is the intended user?
  • What specific problem or question do they have?
  • What is the smallest useful result?
  • What must the first version do—and what is out of scope?
  • What inputs, permissions, costs or privacy considerations matter?
  • How will you know whether the main task works?
BUILD & TEST

Check the work yourself.

  • Open the page or tool and read the instructions.
  • Test the main button and every important link.
  • Try empty or unexpected inputs where relevant.
  • Check the layout and text on a small screen.
  • Use keyboard navigation and check visible focus.
  • Review claims, permissions and any sensitive information.
  • Write down what passed, what failed and what remains untested.
OFFER TOOLKIT

Explain the value honestly.

Use this as a starting template: “I help [specific audience] with [problem] by delivering [concrete work]. The first version includes [scope] and excludes [limits]. We can review [next step] together.”

  • What is the customer trying to achieve?
  • How are they handling this problem today?
  • What would make an improvement useful?
  • What can you realistically deliver and support?
  • What details, permissions and agreement are needed?

Starter repositories and AI tools

The programme will introduce learners to finding and assessing suitable GitHub repositories and available ChatGPT tools or plugins. A curated repository collection is being prepared for sharing; no repository collection is linked here yet.

Before using any repository, review its licence, source, setup steps, dependencies and security. AI tools and integrations vary by account and can have separate costs.
